How the CMS dialysis star rating works

CMS rates dialysis facilities from 1 to 5 stars using measures of patient survival, hospitalisation, hospital readmission, transfusion, emergency-department visits and transplant waitlisting. Each measure is compared with what CMS expects for the facility's patients, so a small rural centre and a large urban one are judged on their own case mix. The rating is a comparison tool — visit the facility, ask about staffing, shift times and home-dialysis training.
